The Alibaba company has introduced its newest AI system called Qwen3.8-Max. According to Alibaba, Qwen3.8-Max is the most powerful AI model that Alibaba has ever introduced. This AI system handles complex tasks and aims to compete with some of the best AI models.
Alibaba Unveils Its Most Capable AI Model Yet, Close to Moonshot in Scale
This release comes amid a wave of Chinese tech firms’ investments in AI. While Chinese companies work on developing cutting-edge AI technology, they aim at improving performance and decreasing operational costs of such models. Similar AI-led 5G growth trends are also shaping the future of digital technology and connected services. The new Qwen3.8-Max model contains 2.4 trillion parameters, which help the AI system learn from data and recognize patterns. The parameters allow the system to recognize patterns, generate answers, solve problems, and perform various tasks. Alibaba’s model is not much smaller than the recently released Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 with 2.8 trillion parameters.

Chinese Companies Expand Open-Weight AI Models
Chinese AI companies are competing to develop advanced models that deliver better results at lower operating costs. Many of these companies are building open-weight AI models that allow developers to download, access, and modify the technology as needed. Parameter numbers are provided by most companies since they provide information about the scale of the technology.
However, it should be noted that increased number of parameters does not necessarily mean increased effectiveness of the technology. The quality of the training data, model architecture, and software development are also critical factors.
Unlike many Chinese AI companies, major tech firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and GoogleAI do not reveal the parameter numbers of their closed-source AI models.
Qwen3.8-Max Achieves Strong AI Rankings
Alibaba introduced Qwen3.8-Max through Arena.AI, a platform that compares and ranks AI models based on their performance. The model quickly became the best-ranked Chinese AI model in the text-based category of this platform. Qwen3.8-Max shows strong results but still ranks behind some models from Anthropic, such as Claude Fable 5 and three Opus variants.
The growing competition among major technology companies is also influencing Apple market performance as companies continue investing in advanced technologies. The latter are better-ranked in terms of the evaluation of text-related AI. Alibaba’s AI model also performed impressively in the visual category. Among the AI models ranked in Arena.AI for their ability to perceive visual information, Qwen3.8-Max received the second place. Only one type of Claude Fable 5 surpassed it.
Handles Text, Images, and Video
Qwen3.8-Max and Kimi K3 by Moonshot AI can accept texts, images, and videos, with a token capacity of up to one million tokens at once. Tokens are the small data units that allow AI systems to interpret data. With an increased number of tokens, the system can process more data in one request, including large texts and programming codes. Alibaba said Qwen3.8-Max uses a mixture-of-experts architecture that activates only the required parts of the model for each task. Although the model has 2.4 trillion parameters, it uses only 95 billion parameters for each request.
Alibaba Plans Qwen3.8-Max Release
Additionally, Alibaba also indicated that the Qwen3.8-Max finished a software engineering project in only 16 days, reflecting its capability of undertaking sophisticated technological operations. Alibaba is planning to release this new product next week through the platform known as Model Studio of Alibaba Cloud.
