Govt electric bike subsidy scheme

The government of Pakistan is working on a new electric bike scheme for its employees. This plan has been introduced in response to rising fuel prices around the world. As global oil prices continue to increase, Pakistan’s oil import costs are also becoming higher, which puts pressure on the national economy. This development also aligns with other national initiatives like electric transport policy updates and fuel relief programs in Pakistan.

To manage this situation, the government wants to encourage the use of electric bikes instead of petrol vehicles. The main goal of this scheme is to reduce fuel consumption and help lower import expenses. At the same time, it aims to make transportation more affordable for government employees and support a shift toward cleaner and more environmentally friendly travel options.

Electric Bike Scheme Details

Under this new plan, the government is expected to distribute around 76,000 electric bikes to eligible government employees across the country. This is one of the largest transport support initiatives aimed at improving mobility for public sector workers while also promoting electric transport. The scheme has been designed by the Engineering Development Board, which is responsible for preparing the technical and policy framework of the project. At the moment, the proposal is in its final stage and is waiting for approval from the Prime Minister’s Office before it can be officially launched. This development is part of broader national efforts linked with Electric Mobility initiatives in Pakistan.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had already given approval to a draft proposal for providing electric bikes to selected government employees. Now, the government is working on turning this idea into a practical program so it can be launched and distributed smoothly among eligible staff.

Subsidy and Financial Assistance Breakdown

To support government employees, the government will offer a subsidy of Rs. 80,000 for each electric bike. The main purpose of this financial help is to make electric bikes more affordable so that more employees can easily take part in the scheme.

This subsidy is divided into two parts for better support. First, Rs. 30,000 will be given to banks as interest support, which will help reduce the cost of installment payments and make repayment easier for employees. Second, the remaining Rs. 50,000 will be directly transferred into the applicant’s bank account. Overall, this system is designed to reduce the total financial burden on employees. It ensures that government workers can buy electric bikes with less pressure and more convenient payment options.

Who Can Apply

Only government employees whose salaries are processed through AGPR (Accountant General Pakistan Revenues) will be able to apply for this scheme. To apply, employees will need to submit an AGPR verification letter during the application process. One important point is that applicants will not need to provide any personal guarantee. This makes the process simpler and easier for government workers. The government has also created a special quota for journalists. However, journalists will receive electric bikes on a self-financed basis. This means they will pay the full amount themselves, unlike government employees. Other eligible applicants will be given an instalment-based payment option, which will make it easier to pay over time.

In the second phase of the scheme, a separate quota will also be introduced for female journalists. This step is expected to increase participation and improve access for women in the media field. The subsidy will only be released when the electric bike is officially registered under the applicant’s name. This means registration is a necessary step to complete the process. In the first phase of the program, some technical issues were reported. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) faced difficulties in verifying certain applicants due to system problems. Despite these challenges, the government still managed to distribute subsidies to around 40,000 citizens in the initial rollout. This shows that the program is already active, even though improvements are still needed for better verification and smooth processing.

This electric bike scheme is an important step by the government to reduce fuel expenses and support eco-friendly transport. If fully approved and expanded, it will help thousands of government employees switch to electric bikes. This will not only save money but also support a cleaner and more sustainable environment in Pakistan. News source eTimes Pakistan
