Mason also addressed the discussions surrounding the newly introduced Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. He explained that the category was created to celebrate the growing influence, talent, and diversity of Asian artists. The aim of the category, he said, was to offer more recognition to artists and not to cause any division among them. He said that forming new categories would enable the Recording Academy’s 15,000 voters to recognize more artists.
New Category Does Not Limit Major Award Opportunities
Additionally, Harvey Mason Jr. clarified that artists competing in genre-based categories can still qualify for major Grammy awards. He explained that categories like Asian Pop, Jazz, or Country do not stop artists from being considered for major awards. These include Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. The Grammy CEO added that artists can qualify in both genre and main categories if they meet the requirements. The clarification comes after BTS withdraws from 2027 Grammy Awards consideration.
BTS Shares Message With Fans
After the decision, all BTS members — RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook — shared the same message on Instagram. The group said they want their music to be recognised for its quality and creativity, without focusing on language or regional differences. The group also thanked their fans, called ARMYs.
BTS’s announcement brought up a debate among their fans regarding how international musicians should be recognized at international award shows. BTS has received recognition from the Grammy Awards in the form of several nominations. Previously, the group received nominations in categories such as Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video; however, BTS has not won a Grammy Award yet.
