Two major telecom operators in Pakistan have officially requested an increase in mobile and internet package prices. The request was submitted to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on April 14, asking for an immediate revision in existing tariff plans.
Mobile Internet Packages in Pakistan Expected to Increase by 15%
The companies say rising operational costs have made current pricing difficult to maintain. They argue that higher expenses on network operations and services are putting pressure on their system, and the PTA will now review the request before making any final decision.
Fuel Price Increase Raises Telecom Operating Costs
Telecom companies say the biggest reason behind this request is the sharp rise in diesel prices. Mobile towers rely a lot on diesel generators to stay running, especially during power cuts. Because of frequent load shedding across the country, these backup generators are used more often, which is increasing daily costs.
The fuel issue is also connected to global political tensions that are affecting oil supply routes. Problems in major shipping paths have pushed fuel prices up around the world. In Pakistan, diesel prices have risen a lot, adding more pressure on industries like telecom.

Earlier, diesel was priced at around Rs. 270 per litre. It has now increased to about Rs. 385 per litre, with some recent spikes reaching as high as Rs. 520 per litre. Telecom operators have warned the PTA that continued cost increases are affecting service quality. They stated that maintaining stable mobile and internet connectivity is becoming difficult, especially in rural and off-grid areas where electricity shortages are more severe.

Mobile and Internet Tariff Hike Proposal Under Review
To handle rising costs, telecom companies have asked for an increase in mobile and internet package prices. According to industry sources, the expected hike could be around 10% to 15%, depending on PTA’s approval.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is currently reviewing the request. A final decision will be made after evaluating financial data and service impact.
