Pakistan’s Oil Marketing Company (OMC) sector recorded a strong rise in earnings during the first nine months of FY26. Total profit increased by 130% year-on-year, reaching Rs52.9 billion. In the same period last year, the sector earned Rs22.9 billion.

This sharp increase clearly shows that the financial condition of the sector has improved. It also indicates that OMC companies performed better even though market conditions kept changing. The rise in earnings suggests that operations became more efficient compared to last year, resulting in stronger overall performance.

This growth shows that the sector benefited from better pricing conditions and stronger financial management. Companies were able to handle costs more effectively and improve their results. Overall, the performance suggests that Pakistan’s OMC sector has entered a stronger earnings phase in FY26.

Key Drivers Behind Strong Profit Growth in the OMC Sector

According to a sector review by Arif Habib Limited, several key factors helped support the rise in earnings. One of the main reasons was higher fuel prices in the market, which improved earnings for oil marketing companies. Companies also benefited from gains in inventory value. When fuel prices increase, the value of stored fuel also goes up, which adds to overall profit.

Another important factor was the sharp drop in finance costs. Lower borrowing expenses reduced the financial pressure on companies and helped them save more. This directly improved net profit margins and strengthened overall earnings across the sector. However, despite higher profits, net revenue fell slightly by 3% to Rs2.61 trillion. This means total sales were a bit lower compared to last year.

Despite this decline in revenue, the sector still managed to deliver a strong performance at the profit level. Gross profit increased significantly by 86%, reaching Rs161.3 billion. This sharp rise indicates that companies were able to manage costs more effectively and improve their earnings from core operations. As seen in recent Fuel Price Update Impact, pricing changes in the fuel market also play an important role in shaping profitability. As a result, gross margins also improved and reached 6.2%. This reflects better cost control, stronger pricing power, and improved operational efficiency across the sector during the period.

Finance costs fell significantly by 35%, dropping to Rs20 billion. This means companies spent much less on borrowing compared to the previous year. This reduction played an important role in improving overall profitability. With lower interest payments, firms were able to keep more of their earnings. However, rising global oil price concerns, such as those highlighted in Global Oil Price Surge, continue to create uncertainty for future cost structures. As a result, the bottom line across the sector strengthened further, adding support to the overall financial performance during the period.

PSO and Attock Petroleum Lead Sector-Wide Earnings Growth

Large listed oil marketing companies played a major role in driving the sector’s growth. Pakistan State Oil (PSO) delivered a strong performance, with profit after tax rising 149.6% to Rs38.1 billion. This is a major increase compared to the same period last year. Attock Petroleum Limited also showed solid growth. Its net earnings went up by 91.8%, reaching Rs14.7 billion. This reflects steady improvement in its financial results. Together, both companies played an important role in boosting overall profits in the OMC sector during this period.

Analysts highlighted that inventory gains were a key factor behind the earnings jump. When fuel prices increase, companies holding stock benefit from higher valuation gains. This effect was more visible in the third quarter, when fuel prices increased in the market and improved stock value. The sector also benefited from favorable pricing conditions. Better fuel pricing conditions, similar to trends seen in Fuel Price Update, helped companies improve their profit margins, even though revenues were slightly lower than before. At the same time, lower finance costs gave companies some relief and allowed them to save more from their earnings. Together, these factors played a key role in supporting overall profit growth.

Experts say the Pakistan OMC sector performed well because of better fuel pricing, gains from inventory, and lower borrowing costs. These factors helped improve overall earnings. However, future performance may change depending on fuel prices, market demand, and government policies, especially in relation to programs like Petrol Subsidy Program. While the sector is strong in 9MFY26, results may still go up and down based on market conditions.
