According to a post published by the PTA on social media network X, people must refrain from spreading any information unless it is verified. The PTA also suggested the public that they can receive authentic information through the official website and social media handles of PTA. History of TikTok Bans in Pakistan

In the past, several restrictions have been imposed on TikTok in Pakistan following complaints about videos considered inappropriate by some users. Similarly, the PTA New SIM Card Rules focus on improving mobile security and monitoring SIM-related activities across the country.

TikTok was first banned in October 2020 after the PTA received complaints about content shared on the platform. The authority asked TikTok to improve its content monitoring system. The company promised to take action against accounts posting inappropriate videos. Following this assurance, the PTA lifted the ban after 10 days. Another restriction was ordered by the Peshawar High Court (PHC) in March 2021. However, it did not remain in place for long and was lifted in April 2021.

The issue was continued in June 2021, when SHC ordered the PTA to suspend the use of TikTok in Pakistan because the court was concerned about the kind of content that was accessible through the platform. However, the court reversed its decision three days after making the ruling.

Again, in July 2021, the PTA blocked the use of TikTok. This time, the body claimed that the platform had not done enough in terms of blocking any inappropriate content. The repeated blocks created controversies regarding content management by digital platforms.

Islamabad High Court Questioned TikTok Restrictions

The Islamabad High Court in August 2021 challenged the ability of PTA to put a full ban on TikTok. According to the court, application of the same method to other digital mediums would also have an effect on services like Google and YouTube. The IHC requested the PTA to seek a discussion with the government and develop a system for handling such problems. It was an interesting point as it raised an issue of managing online forums without compromising the usage of digital services.

Ever since then, TikTok has continued to play a significant role in the social media landscape in Pakistan.
